The Squarespace Showcase Edit 09: Hackney Food Bank
Since we launched in 2017, we’ve been using Squarespace to create beautifully bespoke websites. Over the 5 years, we’ve launched countless numbers of Squarespace websites, through both our bespoke website design and build service here at Studio 77, and also through our sister company Squarebase, which sell plug-and-go Squarespace website templates.
We love using Squarespace as a platform to build our clients’ websites on because it’s easy for our clients to use to maintain their website, and it gives us plenty of freedom to do our thang (no that’s not a typo) with our advanced knowledge of Squarespace coding.
It really is a win-win situation!
The Squarespace Showcase Edit 09: Hackney Food Bank
In our ninth edition of The Squarespace Showcase, we spotlight the London Food Bank charity Hackney Food Bank.
They asked us at Studio 77 to create a new website that helped with website accessibility and also a website that they could easily update themselves.
Hackney Food Bank has an incredible network of 180 volunteers who’ve helped 2021 to deliver nearly 200,000kgs of food to those in need. They also have large corporate partners, including Tesco and Access Self Storage.
Hackney Food Bank’s Squarespace website objectives were:
Create a design that’s easy for the visitor to navigate to the information they need quickly.
Allow people donating food to book online slots for donation with the warehouse.
Make it easier for people to locate the help they need in the community.

Custom Squarespace Design Features
Hackney Food Bank wanted a website that was incredibly easy to navigate for every age and background and attracted people towards donating to help the charity.
Here are just some of the custom elements and plug-ins we added to the Squarespace website design:
We created branded illustrations and SVG icons that we coded in CSS to add to lists making it easier to read locations and opening hours of sites.
Added custom CSS to list sections to clearly display help within the community and to easily add additional local charities.
Custom CSS code was added to create testimonial carousel reels that stand out.

In 4 weeks we wrote over 2500 lines of custom CSS code and built fifteen custom pages.
Don’t forget about mobile!
On top of this, we also added bespoke mobile code to make sure that the Squarespace website works seamlessly on mobile and tablet, as well as desktop. When using lots of custom code it’s important to check that the website renders perfectly on mobile, sometimes the additional code snippets can affect Squarespace’s built-in responsiveness.
Bespoke Squarespace Training
We teach all of our clients how to use and update their website with our bespoke video training at the end of the project, all of our clients say how easy it is for them to update their website after the training. (Although we do offer Squarespace maintenance packages for those who need additional help or are too busy doing all of the other business-owner stuff.)
The Squarespace Website Design
The site aimed to make it so that every visitor is guided towards what they want. We did this by incorporating an option to either go to “donating food” or “food support” at almost every stop.
The site has a vibrant feel of positivity using the brand’s green, orange and blue colours in branded illustrations, buttons and typography. With charity websites and non-profits, we believe it’s best to have these bursts of colour rooted in robust and neat typography to demonstrate the positive impact that the charity has on the community.
This Squarespace website includes custom sections such as coded “shopping lists”, split left and right sections and easy-to-navigate lists of locations with opening hours and locations. We used Acuity scheduling software for the booking platform on the donate page and Churchsuite for the money donation platform.
