The Night Circus
Redesigned cover, internal layout and print technique.
We were asked to create a cover design for Erin Morgenstern’s “The Night Circus”. The book is set across Victorian-era London, rural France, and New York, following a pair of Magicians whose fates are intertwined with a monochromatic circus that opens only after dusk.
We challenged ourselves to create an article that was authentic to the books setting and added to the overall experience of the reader. We carefully selected a production method that creates something that not only stood out in retail space but also provided experiences that would compete with the rising popularity of e-books. The complex design is heat pressed using a steal press printer into the fabric of the cover, in an attempt to not only to remain true to the technologies of the era the book is set but to create a tactile experience of immersion for the reader.
The cover and interior design draws inspiration from the clock that serves as the heart of the circus, and the striped patterning of the tents and performers. The exterior illustration and title text’s aesthetic is a fusion of the hard grime, and technology of the industrial revolution, whilst still referencing to the pageantry and regency style of the setting and era.
The delicate filigree elements of the design were added to suggest the mystique and fantasy of the narrative, and the dark colour is both a nod to the title and a subtle hint to the continuing darkening plot of the novel.
